Academic Fest 2008 Information

Greetings Intrepid Conference-goers!

Here is the much-heralded, long-awaited (overdue?) informational email about Academic Fest. We are just putting the finishing touches on this inaugural event, and it is already shaping up to be much cooler than we had even imagined! More information, including the program schedule is available at our website: http://www.academicfest.org/. You may also send us a note to this email address anytime you desire further clarification. Hopefully this email will cover the big issues of when and where to arrive, and what to expect once you are there!

The conference begins first thing Tuesday morning 8 July 2008, but we highly encourage those of you from outside Madison to come to town Monday night for a quick, fresh start to your Tuesday morning!

Tuesday morning's schedule kicks off with Check In/Registration and a continental breakfast, from 7:15 until 8:30am, at our conference site: the amazing, Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Monona Terrace Convention Center. Come get checked in and get your official Academic Fest credentials and printed schedule, then grab a bite to eat and and cup of coffee before our first session of the day: Dr. Bob Wisher's opening keynote at 8:30am.

The program moves on from there (details at http://www.academicfest.org/what.html) through the morning sessions, lunch, and afternoon sessions.

At 6pm the day's sessions end, and we will make our way across the isthmus, past the quad-cameral state capitol, to restaurant Fresco, (located on the rooftop of the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art) where a delicious (and complimentary) dinner and drinks will be served.

Wednesday begins in a similar fashion, though continental breakfast is served from 7:45 until 8:30am. The conference itself ends at noon on Wednesday, so you will have the rest of that afternoon to explore the beauty and charm that is downtown Madison. At that time, many of the producers of Academic Fest will be transitioning into their next role, as producers of the Games+Learning+Society 4.0 Conference, which some of you are attending, as well. (more information on GLS is at http://glsconference.org/2008/)

I highly encourage everyone to visit the Academic Fest website, sign up for one or more of the open sessions, read the blog and twitter tweets, and think about what you want to take away from your Academic Fest experience... and also what you might actually bring to it, as well. We have designed the conference to be highly interactive and highly responsive, for both speakers and attendees alike. Let us know what you hope to take away from it, and I guarantee that we will do our best to help you achieve that goal!

Most of all, thank you for being interesting in this conversation, and for attending the inaugural Academic Fest!

See you in just under two weeks!

Best,

smd.

Global representation at Academic Fest

We are happy to see a broad range of people planning to attend Academic Fest. The conference is attracting people from many different areas, including: the military, higher education, K-12 (especially online K-12) and other educational technologists.

A quick scan of the attendee list also shows a nice representation of geographic locations. We have people coming from all over the U.S., Canada, Asia, and Europe.

Our staff looks forward to meeting everyone in Madison!

Conference Approaching Fast!

Academic Fest and the Games Learning and Society conference are only a few weeks away. Over the last week we have had a significant increase in registrations for both events. If you are planning to attend and have not yet completed registration, please do so as soon as possible. We are reaching our attendance limit for Academic Fest but we can increase our space if it appears we have significant demand.

There are still some scholarship slots left for University of Wisconsin employees wishing to attend Academic Fest (does not include GLS registration). For those UW employees at campuses outside of Madison, this scholarship also includes lodging costs. Please contact Sean Michael Dargan at smd@academiccolab.org as soon as possible!
